Episode 51
Going off the beaten path can be rewarding and fun. However, sometimes that kind of adventure uses more time and effort than we can afford. I’ve discovered a way to get out and about in this Bluegrass Region that only takes about nine minutes a month and all we must do is put on our earphones.
If you’re from around here you’ve watched Sam Dick on TV. He retired from WKYT in 2021 after anchoring the evening news for thirty-four years. In that job, besides being at the anchor desk, he was a field anchor covering all kinds of local happenings, both good and bad.
He won six regional Emmy’s, and Edward R. Murrow awards for broadcasting excellence. In 2023, he was inducted into the Kentucky Journalism Hall of Fame.
With that background, it didn’t take long after retirement for him to take on another broadcasting project. One that I particularly love.
Today he is host of a radio segment on WEKU named Off the Beaten Path with Sam Dick.
All the episodes are under five minutes long. Umm. Maybe that was my inspiration for my Under Five segments with my podcast, such as this one. Thank you, Sam.
He produces two of these a month. The first one was broadcast on June 24, 2022. It was about the Sticky Wickets Farm in Lancaster, Kentucky.
One of his recent ones is titled The Three J’s of Basket Weaving. Another of my favorites is about Bailey’s Beer Cheese.
Each episode is taped on site, off the beaten path, and includes background sounds from that location, plus comments from the people involved, and Sam’s expert narration. I feel like I’m right there with him.
And just this week I discovered that he also films the episodes and some of them appear on WKYT. Go to their website and search for Off the Beaten Path with Sam Dick.
I’m a radio, audio, podcast guy and Sam does an expert job writing these for listening, so I’ll stick with the podcast experience.
You can listen to Off the Beaten Path on WEKU radio at 88.9 or do as I do and listen when it’s most convenient on their website or your podcast app such as Apple Podcast, Spotify, Podbean, or Pocket Casts.
Just search for Off the Beaten Path with Sam Dick.
See the links below for some of the places to listen.
I’ve listened to all 60 plus episodes and will continue to invest under ten minutes a month to go off the beaten path around Kentucky to learn about people and places I most likely would not even know about, with Sam Dick as my guide. And you can too.
Again, Thank You, Sam. I’m a better podcaster because of your example.
